Trees

A tree is a perennial woody plant. It is most often defined as a woody plant that has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground on a single main stem or trunk with clear apical dominance. A minimum height specification at maturity is cited by some authors, varying from 3 m to 6 m; some authors set a minimum of 10 cm trunk diameter (30 cm girth). Woody plants that do not meet these definitions by having multiple stems and/or small size are usually called shrubs, although many trees such as mallee do not meet such definitions. Compared with most other plants, trees are long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old and growing to up to 115 m (379 ft) high.

Trees are an important component of the natural landscape because of their prevention of erosion and the provision of a weather-sheltered ecosystem in and under their foliage. They also play an important role in producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as moderating ground temperatures. They are also elements in landscaping and agriculture, both for their aesthetic appeal and their orchard crops (such as apples). Wood from trees is a building material, as well as a primary energy source in many developing countries. Trees also play a role in many of the world's mythologies (see trees in mythology).

What types of trees turn either red or orange in the fall?
Q. I want to know what types of trees turn red or orange in the fall. I live in Nebraska and almost every tree here turns yellow in the fall, except for a few here and there. Don't get me wrong, yellow isn't bad, but I have always liked reds and oranges the most, especially reds. I want to plant some, so what trees would turn that color and also grow well in Nebraska? Thanks so much! How about besides maple trees?

A. My favorites (in no particular order): red maple (Acer rubrum) - red sugar maple (Acer saccharum) - yellow to orange - just beginning to turn, so you can see the range of color black gum - dark pink-orange sweetgum - goes through a progression from yellow to orange to red to deep maroon - leaves in different stages of color sassafras - yellow to orange If you're looking for something a little shorter, there's also flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) which turns red and several viburnums (Viburnum spp.) which turn red to dark maroon. I'd post links, but Yahoo! has a limit of 10 links to post initially. But you can do image searches for these yourself. You might be able to get any of these through local nurseries, but be aware that there are… [cont.]

What proportion of the worlds trees have been cleared since human civilisation?
Q. Before humans began civilisations, trees would have grown unabated and would be wherever conditions were right ... Then over a few thousand years; Humans began cutting them for buildings, wood, fuel, farming land, grazing land and other stuff Im interested to know, if anyone has a clue, what proportion of the worlds trees/ the area of trees have been cleared (and not grown back as it was) since humans came on the civilised scene (any evidence would be welcomed but not compulsory) The difference between then, and now is it 20% of natural trees? is it 50% of natural trees? is it 70%?
