For whites you're going to want to use hot water, for light colors you can use warm water, and for dark colors you should use cold water. You should fill the washing machine compartment about 3/4 with clothes to get the best effect. On some washers you can adjust the water level for the load size. I use the same detergent for all of my laundry - just find an all-purpose one. If your washing machine has a separate compartment where you put the detergent, use liquid detergent. If the water runs through it for a prewash and a wash cycle, make sure to put the detergent in at the beginning of the wash cycle.
